Openpatho's mission is to help pathology laboratories and medical professionals work more efficiently by introducing AI-powered tools into existing diagnostic workflows. Built in close collaboration with pathologists and machine learning specialists, their solutions are designed to meet high standards of clinical accuracy, scalability, and usability.
Business Challenges
Openpatho needed a secure and scalable digital platform that could support medical clinics in submitting patient cases for histopathology review and AI-assisted analysis. The system had to handle complex workflows involving multiple users, patient case records, and large histopathology image files while remaining easy to use for healthcare professionals.
They also needed to combine several critical processes into one unified solution:
- clinic and staff account management
- secure upload and storage of pathology sample images
- AI-assisted image analysis for detection of possible oncological abnormalities
- real-time tracking of case processing statuses

In addition, the platform needed to remain customizable and scalable as Openpatho's product evolved and new workflows, integrations, and diagnostic features were introduced.
Solution
Flatlogic partnered with Openpatho to develop a custom web application using the Flatlogic Generator as the foundation for a secure, scalable, and flexible medical workflow platform.
Using React and Next.js on the frontend, we created a responsive interface for clinics and their staff to register, upload cases, and monitor progress. On the backend, Node.js, Express.js, and PostgreSQL provided a stable architecture for managing patient case data, user roles, and reporting workflows.
To support the project's medical and operational requirements, the platform included:
- secure authentication and access control via AWS Cognito
- large image upload and storage using Wasabi Storage Service
- real-time case updates through WebSockets
- AI integration for histopathology image analysis and pathology support workflows
- report generation tools to help physicians prepare structured professional conclusions
- cloud deployment and CI/CD infrastructure using Docker, Nginx, AWS, and GitHub Actions
The application was designed to support AI-assisted cancer screening, where uploaded histopathology sample images are processed and analyzed to help detect potential oncological pathologies. The system then helps transform this analysis into structured outputs that assist medical specialists in making faster and more informed decisions.
A key part of the workflow involved expert participation from an experienced specialist - a professor and practicing histopathologist - ensuring that the platform supported real clinical expertise rather than replacing it.
By building the solution on top of the Flatlogic Generator, Openpatho received a product with full source code ownership, making it easier to scale, customize, and extend the platform as their medical and business needs continue to grow.
