AI Energy Management Software for Businesses
Watt Footprint
Watt Footprint is an Irish energy management company helping businesses understand and reduce electricity, gas, carbon, solar, water, and energy spending.
To build your own AI-enabled energy management platform:
About
Watt Footprint provides energy monitoring and management services for businesses across industries including manufacturing, hospitality, retail, and pharmaceuticals. Its work combines energy expertise with software that helps teams see where energy is used, understand cost and carbon impact, and identify practical opportunities to reduce waste.
The web application gives customers and Watt Footprint specialists a shared view of live and historical energy data. It brings together consumption, utility bills, budgets, forecasts, alerts, and reporting across individual sites or larger portfolios.
Business Challenges
Watt Footprint needed to move beyond general-purpose monitoring tools and create a product it could own, customize, and expand around its energy management workflows. The first version also had to reach users quickly, while leaving a reliable foundation for continuous product development.
The platform needed to make several complex processes feel simple for business users:
- combine electricity, gas, carbon, solar, water, and cost information in one interface
- organize data across companies, locations, areas, and user roles
- turn detailed time-series data into clear dashboards and comparisons
- capture and review utility bill data without repetitive manual entry
- support configurable budgets, alerts, reports, and exports
- remain responsive and easy to use as the product expanded
The challenge was not only to launch an MVP. Watt Footprint needed a product foundation that could keep evolving as new monitoring, forecasting, and customer workflows were introduced.
Solution
Flatlogic used the Flatlogic Generator as the starting point for the application, providing the core data management, authentication, and full-stack structure needed to move quickly. The team then developed a custom energy management product around Watt Footprint's operating model, visual language, and customer experience.
The web application was delivered iteratively and expanded through ongoing releases. This approach allowed Watt Footprint to launch early, learn from real product use, and introduce more advanced capabilities without rebuilding the platform from scratch.
The resulting platform includes:
- multi-location dashboards with flexible periods and comparisons
- energy, cost, and carbon analytics for sites and business areas
- AI-assisted utility bill capture and review workflows
- custom dashboards built from reusable data widgets
- budgets, consumption targets, and proactive alerts
- forecasting based on historical energy data
- automated reports and downloadable data for further analysis
- responsive light and dark interfaces for different working environments
AI is used where it can remove repetitive work and improve decision support. It helps turn uploaded bill documents into structured information and supports forward-looking consumption insights. Users still work with transparent dashboards, editable budgets, and reviewable data rather than a black-box workflow.
Because Watt Footprint owns the source code, the platform can continue to adapt to new customer needs, data sources, energy products, and business models. The Generator foundation accelerated the first release while preserving the flexibility expected from custom software.
From Product Idea to Production
Flatlogic formed a dedicated cross-functional product team covering delivery management, product design, engineering, and quality assurance. Rather than treating the engagement as a one-off build, the team established an end-to-end delivery system that could move each idea from initial discussion to a documented production release.
Separate staging and production environments supported safe validation and controlled releases. Across a multi-year engagement, this process helped the team deliver continuously and grow the original concept into a complete customer-facing SaaS used in day-to-day operations.
Result
Watt Footprint gained a production web platform that connects energy data with the workflows businesses use to control consumption and spending. Customers can move from high-level portfolio trends to individual locations, bills, budgets, and areas without switching between disconnected tools.
The collaboration delivered:
- a unified view of energy usage, cost, carbon, solar, and water
- less manual work in utility bill processing and recurring reporting
- clearer comparisons across periods, locations, and business areas
- configurable dashboards for different customer needs
- AI-enabled forecasting and alerts that support earlier action
- a scalable, fully owned product foundation for continued growth
The project demonstrates how a Generator-based MVP can grow into a specialized SaaS platform through focused product design, senior engineering, and continuous delivery. Teams planning a similar operational product can explore Flatlogic's business software solutions and retain full ownership of the resulting application.
